 | 'Social Package 2008': The EC's Great 'Social Renewal' Swindle The European Commission's new 'social package', consisting of legislative proposals as well as a range of non-legislative communications, reports and recommendations, was unveiled in early July. The legislative proposals include a directive on cross-border health care, a proposal to revise the existing European Works Councils directive as well as a horizontal directive on anti-discrimination outside the workplace. According to GUE/NGL President Francis Wurtz, their "effect in terms of promoting measurable progress towards Social Europe is doubtful. On the legislative front, the main thrust of the Commission's policies continues to be a Europe in which market liberalisation, deregulation and flexible labour are being prioritised first and foremost".
